This is gradual, and very often hereditary, hair loss in terms of quantity and quality. It mainly affects men, and sometimes women and may be accompanied by dandruff and/or an oily scalp.
Hamilton classification
It affects 30% of 30-year-old men, 40% of 40-year-old men, 85% of 65-year-old men, and has an impact on image.
Androgenetic hair loss is genetically programmed. It is the result of various factors:
- a weakening of the tissue environment surrounding the hair bulb, thus exhausting the hair's "potential" faster, in other words its ability to "replace itself 25 times during its life span". Hair has a shorter life cycle (e.g. 6 months instead of 4 or 5 years).
- the action of a certain enzyme (5-α reductase) causes hypertrophy in the sebaceous glands and regression of the hair bulb.
